Tom Evans has been the Executive Director of the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority (CRA) since 2013. He has led the CRA through an organizational restructuring and strategic planning process. He is now facilitating infill development projects in Kendall Square and launching new community investment initiatives citywide. Before coming to the CRA, Tom worked at MassDOT where he wrote sustainable transportation policies, notably the state’s GreenDOT Implementation Plan. Previously, Tom served as the Planning Division Manager of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, facilitating the planning, adoption, and implementation of signature revitalization plans along the southeast waterfront of San Francisco. He holds a Masters of City Planning from the University of California and a Bachelor's in Environmental Biology.
In her role at the CRA, Kathryn worked with the Board and staff to develop a strategic plan for the organization, a process that involved reimagining its role in the City and identifying opportunities for new endeavors. She is currently helping shepherd one of those projects – the Foundry - toward implementation. In her professional practice, Kathryn has been working with cities and institutions to shape their future development for over 25 years. Her commitment to community engagement has been effective in ensuring that regeneration efforts capture local interests and that i mplementation strategies are realistic. At national conferences, Ms. Madden has recently spoken about economic development, medical districts, and the university-city interface, and recent projects have been focused on community development in immigrant neighborhoods. Ms. Madden graduated from MIT with dual master’s degrees in City Planning and Architectural Studies, and currently teaches planning studios at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Ellen joined the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority in June 2014 as the CRA Office Manager. She focuses on the daily operations of the office and provides administrative support for the CRA Board, its Executive Director and the staff. Before coming to the CRA, Ellen worked for several nonprofits as their office administrator and bookkeeper. Her skills are process management, communication and humor! Ellen holds an MS in Computer Science from Boston University and a BA in Biology and Math from Binghamton University, SUNY.
An experienced urban planner, Jason is focusing on innovation, idea generation and implementation at the CRA, guided by the organization's 2014 Strategic Plan. Jason is a passionate urbanist, traveler, and resident of Cambridge. Originally from Albany, NY, and having previously lived in Boston, DC, Providence, and Detroit, Jason holds a BA in Urban Studies and International Relations as well as a Masters of Regional Planning focusing on transportation from University at Albany, SUNY. In 2016, Jason completed his Certificate in Real Estate Development from the Urban Land Institute (ULI). Jason has previously worked for several years as a sustainability planning consultant in Boston, and most recently spent several years in Detroit as DTE Energy’s lead urban planner and placemaker, co-managing a unique program to stabilize, improve and transform part of downtown Detroit. Jason describes himself as an urban mechanic, intrapreneur, and futurist dedicated to creating sustainable cities, organizations, transportation systems, buildings, and places that are economically viable, socially vibrant, and environmentally conscious.
Carlos joined the CRA as a Project Manager in May of 2016. Having served over 14 years as a Project Manager in the public sector in and around the Boston metropolitan area, Carlos provides a unique perspective and background. He comes to the CRA with knowledge and a distinct understanding of community engagement, transparency as well as innovative ideas in order to promote growth and success. Carlos possesses extensive project management experience from challenging projects of city owned and abandoned property, as well as experience with redevelopment of parks and open space. Carlos Peralta holds a BA with a concentration in Communication from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
5 members (4 appointed by the City Manager, subject to confirmation by City Council, and 1 member appointed by the State). Only Cambridge residents may serve on the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority.
