EZRide
Established in 2017, the Kendall Square Transit Enhancement Program (KSTEP) is an initiative aimed at improving transit in Kendall Square. Developed under the Massachusetts Environmental Protection Act (MEPA) review process, the program addresses the increased transit demand resulting from new developments in the area, with an initial funding of $6 million dedicated to enhancing transit infrastructure. Governance and funding priorities are guided by the KSTEP Working Group, which includes representatives from the CRA, City of Cambridge, MassDOT, and the MBTA. In 2024, KSTEP collaborated with the CRTMA to prepare an all-day service pilot for EZRide in East Cambridge, which is set to begin in Spring 2025. This groundbreaking initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between the KSTEP Working Group agencies, which agreed to provide $1 million in funding to bring this vision to life. The EZRide has run on weekdays during the morning and evening rush hours, connecting commuters throughout East Cambridge to the Green Line and North Station. With the commitment from KSTEP, the two-year pilot will extend the current EZRide service schedule to include midday and weekend service, continue to guarantee free fares for all users, and will integrate existing shuttle operations serving the CambridgeSide Mall. This coordinated approach will ensure greater efficiency, frequency, and accessibility for all riders
