Galaxy Park

The newly replanted eastern portion of Galaxy Park, looking West down Main Street in Kendall Square.

Galaxy Park sits at the juncture of three major crossroads in Kendall Square and is also adjacent to two MBTA station entrances, leading it to carry a large amount of foot traffic throughout the day. It is perhaps most recognizable by the globe-shaped fountain that sits at its center, but its character is also shaped by the surrounding landscape which previously included a seldom-used lawn space east of the paved fountain area.

The CRA, in partnership with BXP, has now transformed the eastern portion of Galaxy Park into a more vibrant, resilient, and ecologically rich public space.

The renewed landscape:

  • Supports birds, pollinators, and local biodiversity

  • Introduces a diverse mix of groundcovers, perennials, ferns, sedges, and shrubs beneath the existing tree canopy

  • Creates a stronger visual and acoustic buffer from Broadway and Main Street

  • Reduces lawn area while preserving open green space for relaxation

  • Protects the iconic views of the area’s Looking Glass sculpture and its connection to Kendall Square and the Longfellow Bridge

Previously, the CRA explored design changes to Galaxy Park in 2022 and developed multiple design concepts to improve the park’s eastern lawn space and the adjacent eastbound Broadway streetscape. In 2025, the CRA decided to move forward with soft landscaping changes to the park could progress independently of any streetscape work.
